About Company

Terre des hommes (pronounced [tɛʁ dez‿ɔm]; French for ‘Land of People’ / ‘Land of Men’), also capitalized as Terre des Hommes, is an international children’s rights charitable humanitarian umbrella organization under the aegis of the International Federation of Terre des Hommes (TDHIF), with independent organizations in Canada, Denmark, France, Germany, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Spain, and Syria. It was founded in 1960 by Edmond Kaiser in Lausanne, Switzerland.[1] The organization is named after Antoine de Saint-Exupéry’s 1939 philosophical memoir Terre des hommes (English title: Wind, Sand and Stars). An important part of the TDHIF’s work is as a consultant to the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC). Promoting the Convention on the Rights of a Child is an important activity of Tdh. Advocating for children’s rights, defending them, and spreading information are tasks which Terre des Hommes – to the aid of children considers a priority. TDHIF runs the two campaigns “Destination Unknown” – Children on the Move (www.destination-unknown.org) and “Children Win” – Changing the Game of Mega Sporting Events (www.childrenwin.org). Foundation of the organization was awarded Balzan Prize in 2018.

As the leading Swiss organisation for children’s aid, created in 1960, the Terre des hommes foundation is committed to protecting children’s lives and their rights, and improving their well-being. We aim to do so through innovative programmes focused on health, migration and access to justice, specially designed to have both short- and long-term impacts.

For more than 60 years, we have been working in difficult situations, in countries at war, regions devastated by natural disasters, and places where poverty and malnutrition force millions of children and their families to migrate elsewhere. We provide direct and indirect support to millions of children, their families and communities in around thirty countries every year. Take at look at our vision, mission and values.

Vision

We all aspire to a world where children’s rights, as defined in the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child, are always respected. Because we live in a world where children and young people cannot always grow up safe from harm, we support them, hand in hand, in building their resilience, so that they can become actors and actors of positive change in their lives.
