About Company

In 2015, the UN adopted the 2030 Agenda and the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to end extreme poverty, rescue the planet and build a peaceful world while “leaving no one behind”. Although great progress has been achieved in many areas, it will take ambitious and holistic actions to deliver the goals and address the world’s biggest challenges, especially climate change and inequality.

Since the signing of our first development cooperation contract around 50 years ago, NIRAS has been delivering tailored, innovative, value-creating, and results-driven solutions to enable our clients and partners achieve their goals. We strive to provide transformative support for positive change, addressing root causes, and magnifying impact through flexibility in implementation, capturing SDG-linked results, and celebrating successes.

As recognised by the SDGs, building sustainable future societies requires integrated holistic solutions and cross-sector collaborative approaches.

As a knowledge-driven organisation, we provide extensive expertise, policy advice, and proven results-based management to large complex projects, while integrating economic, social, and technical science in broad-based sustainable solutions in a variety of fields. We do this in partnership with our country offices in over 30 countries and our extensive network of experts to ensure a comprehensive, results-driven approach that is both contextually sensitive and produces innovative outcomes for maximum value.

NIRAS Development Consulting currently manages a vast portfolio of high impact projects across Africa, Asia Pacific, Central and Eastern Europe, Latin America and the Middle East with a range of clients, primarily international aid agencies such as ADB, DANIDA, FCDO, GIZ, the EU, KfW, SDC, MFA Finland, SIDA, and the World Bank, amongst others. Client expertise is coordinated by several Key Account Managers.

We apply the highest ethical standards wherever we operate, be it in fragile, post-conflict, least developed, emerging, or middle-income economies. Our story is the achievements of our clients and how we share, learn from, and build on knowledge generated within the projects we facilitate. We are proud of the contribution NIRAS makes in developing sustainable solutions, but we always have the ambition to do more. We constantly strive to demonstrate how projects can be scaled up or carried over to other markets and continue to introduce new services, tools and approaches for the benefit of our customers and the communities in which we operate.

NIRAS in Kenya

The NIRAS story in Kenya is a long one: having implemented projects in the country since the early 1970s, we are a consistent and long-term partner with government, local institutions and international donors. We have expanded and grown over time, from project, representative and branch offices to incorporating LTS Africa. By continually expanding and investing in our presence in Kenya, NIRAS Africa now has nine permanent staff and five consultants, which gives us the ability to make rapid on-the-ground decisions, coordinate the implementation of our many local projects, and meet stakeholders on their home turf.

Because we have such a long history in Kenya, we understand the unique requirements which drive development cooperation in the country. NIRAS Africa is well aligned to Kenya’s development agenda, both through our staff with technical expertise in agriculture, environment and climate change, resilience, gender and urban and private sector development, and through our recent and ongoing projects that include broad-based agribusiness programmes such as the Agricultural Sector Development Support Programme to encourage continuous development and commercialisation; technical assistance to the National Drought Management Authority to set-up and operationalise drought contingency funds; and different M&E assignments in the areas of natural resource management, agriculture and climate change. We offer services in policy, programme and project formulation, technical assistance for sector reforms and programme implementation, and monitoring, evaluation and Learning (MEL).

Office in Nairobi

NIRAS Africa in Nairobi is the first NIRAS Head Office outside Europe. It was established in early 2019 to ensure coordination between all the NIRAS offices in Africa and to strengthen NIRAS presence in Africa through more senior staff in place on the continent. By decentralising its operations, NIRAS is able to respond quicker and with more relevance to the needs of our clients and to continue to build inclusive economic, social and environmental prosperity.

NIRAS Africa is combining the role of a Head Office for all other NIRAS offices in Africa: Ethiopia, Tanzania, Malawi, Mozambique, Uganda and Zambia with a responsibility for Kenya and the neighbouring countries not covered by an office, mainly Rwanda, South Sudan and Somalia.
