About Company

Ending poverty begins with agriculture

Heifer International is on a mission to end hunger and poverty in a sustainable way by supporting and investing alongside local farmers and their communities.

Heifer’s Mission

We work to end hunger and poverty in partnership with the communities we serve. Our programs support entrepreneurs around the world, creating lasting change from the ground up.

It begins with a seed investment of livestock or agriculture, followed by mentorship to help project participants build a business, and ultimately to gain access to supply chains and markets.

These families are able to earn a living income and continuously lift up their communities as they train the next generation of leaders.

By supporting and training the world’s farmers, ranchers, and female business owners, we’re investing in a new breed of success.

Our History: 75 Years of Lasting Change

In 1944, Dan West began outlining a simple but groundbreaking plan to tackle hunger around the world. His philosophy still inspires Heifer’s work today. Partnering with farmers across a range of different livestock and crops, we create unique solutions to local challenges. Together, we build inclusive, resilient economies, so communities can develop effective ways to end global hunger and poverty in a sustainable way.

KENYA

Leveraging hub models and cooperatives for success

We work in partnership with producer groups, financial institutions, county governments, processors, and input and service providers across the dairy, poultry and beef value chains.

Background:

Heifer International’s presence in Kenya dates back to 1981 when we started working with a women’s dairy group in the western part of the country.

Our work has since evolved to cover the dairy, poultry and beef value chains, carried out in partnership with producer groups, financial institutions, county governments, processors, and input and service providers.

New government policies, the growth of agribusinesses and increased consumer demand for meat and dairy products have transformed agriculture, creating new markets for local farmers. Their challenge is to make their enterprises profitable and sustainable.

In the dairy sector alone, weather has big impacts on production. Yields can drop by 50% during the dry season.
